Manchester United bosses have postponed making a final decision on their next permanent manager, with Michael Carrick remaining in the job on an interim basis.
Michael Carrick will be given the chance to become Manchester United’s permanent manager.
Carrick is expected to begin negotiations with club leaders next week over a new and improved contract to replace Ruben Amorim, who was sacked in January. United’s co-owners, the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, believe Carrick has proven himself worthy of the job on a full-time basis.
Since taking over on an interim basis, Carrick has guided United to Champions League qualification, with just two defeats in 15 games. Old Trafford bosses are said to have held a conference call before agreeing to Carrick’s appointment.
Other candidates are also being discussed, including Thomas Tuchel, Luis Enrique, Julian Nagelsmann and Unai Emery. However, United are aware that luring one of them to Old Trafford is unrealistic for a number of reasons.

Tuchel and Nagelsmann will be tied until at least after the World Cup. Enrique is not ready to leave Paris Saint-Germain, but Emery wants to remain at Aston Villa.
This means Carrick is in pole position to become United’s seventh permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. And although Mr Fergie was not consulted during the process, it is believed he has approved Mr Carrick’s appointment.
Carrick will want assurances that the club will do everything possible to achieve their major transfer targets this summer. But he has made no secret of the fact that he wants the chance to lead the club back into the big time.
United hope to sign Carrick by the end of this month so they can plan for next season. Carrick has proven to be a very popular figure within the team and has been the frontrunner for several weeks.
And with Carrick’s appointment imminent, captain Bruno Fernandes is also expected to commit his long-term future to United.
