The EFL has released a major update on Spygate, confirming that the Championship play-off final could be subject to change. An uproar has broken out in English football’s second tier, with Southampton and Middlesbrough awaiting the outcome of an investigation into the scandal.

A Saints staff member has been arrested on suspicion of spying on Middlesbrough’s training sessions in preparation for the play-off semi-final first leg. The South Coast side, who won 2-1 on aggregate, were charged with breaching two regulations relating to acting in good faith and observing other teams training days before they were scheduled to play.

The EFL has now confirmed that an independent panel will meet on or before Tuesday, May 19, when Southampton’s fate will be decided.

If found guilty, he could be ruled out of the play-off final against Hull. In that case, Middlesbrough will play against Wembley on Saturday, May 23rd.

“The EFL can today provide an interim update on the ongoing disciplinary proceedings involving Southampton following Tuesday’s Championship play-off semi-final second leg,” the EFL said in a statement.

“The Independent Disciplinary Commission hearing is expected to take place on or before Tuesday, May 19. The exact date is still under discussion and will be determined shortly.”

“The committee will make a decision as soon as possible after considering the relevant submissions and evidence. The EFL has no control over the proposed timetable as the proceedings are being conducted by an independent disciplinary committee.”

“Despite this, the EFL continues to plan for the Championship play-off final to take place as planned on Saturday 23 May, with kick-off time set for 4.30pm.

“However, supporters should be aware that the match may be subject to change depending on the outcome of any disciplinary proceedings. The EFL has a number of contingency plans in place, including consideration of an appeals process if necessary.”

We have also announced new information for Southampton and Hull fans regarding tickets to the final.

“Hull City and Southampton will share further information regarding their respective sales processes later today,” the EFL added.

“The sale is subject to the usual terms and conditions and in such circumstances fans are advised to pay particular attention to the terms and conditions. Similarly, supporters should take the circumstances into account when booking relevant travel and accommodation.”

“This decision follows ongoing coordination with the club to ensure a sale arrangement is implemented as soon as possible.

“The League recognizes that this complex situation is causing concern and confusion for supporters, particularly those making travel arrangements, and will continue to provide as clear information as possible.

“However, in these clearly exceptional circumstances, the league believes this is the most appropriate course of action.”
