Derek McInnes rants about Celtic’s ‘disgusting’ penalty in full | Soccer | Sports

Furious manager Derek McInnes branded the decision to award Celtic a highly controversial penalty in their dramatic 3-2 win over Motherwell as “disgusting”. Hearts’ side now need at least a draw with Parkhead’s side on the final day of the season to win the league title. The Jambos held up their end of the bargain with an impressive 3-0 win over Falkirk at Tynecastle, with Frankie Kent, Cammy Devlin and Blair Spital all finding the net.

Supporters inside Tynecastle were watching the match at Fir Park at the same time, and after Elliot Watt, Daenen Maeda, Benjamin Nygren and Liam Gordon exchanged goals, the score went into stoppage time tied at 2-2. However, late in stoppage time, referee John Beaton ultimately called out the spot after VAR pointed out that Steelmen winger Sam Nicholson had disposed of the ball inside the area as he jumped to contest a header with Auston Trusty. The resulting spot kick was converted by Kelechi Iheanacho.

Hearts remain just one point ahead of Martin O’Neill’s side ahead of Sunday’s crucial showdown at Celtic Park. So the Gorgies must avoid defeat in order to win the Championship for the first time at a non-Old Firm club since 1985. It is Hearts’ first title since 1960.

The former Aberdeen and Kilmarnock manager said nothing after seeing footage of the controversial decision. “When you heard that Celtic won a penalty in the 96th minute and VAR was going to be applied, you would think Celtic would get a penalty,” McInnes told Sky Sports.

“But when I look at it again, I’m disgusted. I don’t think it was a penalty. We’re playing against everyone and we’ll be ready for Saturday.”

“I don’t think it was a penalty kick. There were two more (better) cries for a penalty kick in the game against Motherwell. If I were Motherwell I’d watch it again and be disappointed.”

“I think it’s very unfortunate that they got that penalty. They (Celtic) were very lucky and we have to realize that we will face anything. We have to deal with Saturday’s game.”

Previewing this weekend’s title showdown, McInnes added: “It’s difficult in any game because no one plays football aiming for a draw. When players are looking to win games, go for wins, just play for points, that’s a difficult mindset.”

“Celtic are in good form. I have to say Martin has done a very good job getting Celtic into this position. For you, for Scottish football, it’s perfect in terms of drama. It’s perfect in that sense.”

“We’re just happy to be part of it. The important point now is to make sure we go and win the title. Sometimes in life you have to beat the best team and the best team for many years has been Celtic.

“We did very well against them, so we need to go for a positive result. I’m already looking forward to it. We won’t feel sorry for ourselves. What a game it will be.”
