Brazilian winger Anthony endured a miserable spell at Manchester United’s Old Trafford, but has returned to his best form after leaving the club to join Spanish side Real Betis.

Anthony believes his newfound confidence at Real Betis has helped him produce the “best season” of his career. The former Manchester United man had a brilliant season with the Spanish team.

He has scored 14 goals and provided 10 assists in all competitions this season, and has scored five goals in half-season while on loan in La Liga. His form is far from what he showed at Old Trafford.

Anthony, who joined from Dutch giants Ajax for £81 million, scored just 12 goals in 96 appearances for United. Anthony explained his recent form and claimed that the trust given to him by manager Manuel Pellegrini and colleagues has been a big help.

In an interview with DAZN, he said: “I’m very happy. Like you said, this is the result of a lot of hard work. I’m very proud of what I’ve done. It’s also thanks to my teammates and also thanks to my coach who gave me a lot of confidence. We keep moving forward.”

He continued: “First of all, I’m happy to have this season. It’s been a great season. I’m very happy and proud. I know I’ve made sacrifices. I’ve been uncomfortable for over 20 games, but I always say that when I wear this shirt, I sacrifice myself.”

Anthony could return to his former club United next season. His current team, Real Betis, remains in contention to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

They sit fifth in the table, four points behind Celta Vigo heading into the final three games of the season. Anthony has previously explained why he struggled so much at Old Trafford, claiming his personal life was a big reason.

“Apart from my football life, I think my personal life got in the way quite a bit because of what I went through and the moments I had there,” he said. “Whether I like it or not, it has had a huge impact on me. So, of course, I know my potential.

“It wasn’t for nothing that I went to the World Cup, it wasn’t for nothing that I was sold to United for a lot of money. And I know my worth. People look at the moment, but they don’t see the big picture, what’s going to happen.

“So, like I said, my feeling at United was that there were good times and bad times, but of course we could have done more and we could have done better.”
