Southampton face Middlesbrough in the second leg of the Championship play-off semi-final on Tuesday night as an independent disciplinary panel considers punishment for the spying charges.

Southampton’s chief executive has defended the “character” of his staff and stressed the importance of giving the “full picture” amid rumors swirling about allegations of spying at the club. Saints face Middlesbrough in a tense Championship play-off semi-final second leg on Tuesday night.

An independent disciplinary committee is currently considering next steps after a member of Southampton’s staff was suspected of spying on Boro’s training session before the first leg. The Saints have been charged with breaching two EFL regulations, but it is understood they will not contest the charges.

Boro, who could only manage a 0-0 draw in the first leg at the Riverside Stadium, are seeking the harshest punishment possible. The EFL reportedly believes their opponents should be kicked out of the play-offs with a fine that is insufficient to act as a deterrent, with other teams in the Championship believing they may have been victims of covert tactics.

Southampton manager Tonda Eckert has stood by the club’s original statement, saying only that they would “fully co-operate” with the EFL’s investigation. Now, CEO Phil Parsons has further elaborated on the club’s stance ahead of the second leg.

“The club is cooperating fully with the EFL and the disciplinary committee, while also conducting an internal investigation to ensure all facts and context are properly understood,” Parsons said in a statement.

“Given the tense fixture schedule and short turnaround between games, we have requested time to complete that process thoroughly and responsibly. While we understand the discussion and speculation that has ensued in recent days, we also believe it is important to establish the full situation before any conclusions are reached.”

“I have spent a considerable amount of time around this football club so I know the character of the people there. The togetherness shown by players, staff and supporters throughout this season has been a huge part of our progress and I am confident that spirit will continue.”

“This season marks another important step for the football club. We know there is still more work ahead of us and we are still far from where we ultimately want to be, but the solidarity shown in difficult moments continues to define Southampton Football Club.”

“The support from our fans during the season has once again been exceptional and everyone involved with the club is fully committed to building long-term success in the right way.

“Dragan Solak continues to support the club financially and is proud that we have been able to remain competitive while operating within financial regulations, which is important for the long-term stability of the club. Our focus is fully on tonight’s match. Now is the time for all of us to support the team and create a new special atmosphere at St. Mary’s.”

The winner of Tuesday’s draw will face Hull City at Wembley in the play-off final on Saturday 23 May. However, even if they lose, Middlesbrough will reportedly continue training in the hope that the EFL will send off Southampton.
