Southampton calls for ‘Spygate’ row at Middlesbrough in statement | Soccer | Sports

Southampton have asked for time to carry out an internal review amid the Spygate scandal. Saints have been charged with breaching EFL regulations after a member of their staff allegedly spied on Middlesbrough training ahead of their play-off semi-final clash.

The South Coast side are accused of breaching two regulations: acting with integrity and observing other teams training days before a scheduled fixture.

Boro have complained to the EFL about the alleged unauthorized filming on private property and it is claimed club bosses will seek their expulsion. Both teams are currently in even positions heading into the game at St Mary’s.

Any hearing will only take place after the second leg of the semi-finals. After this match, there are 11 days until the final at Wembley Stadium.

“The club is cooperating fully with the EFL and disciplinary committee, as well as conducting an internal investigation to ensure all facts and context are properly understood,” Parsons said in a statement.

“The support from our fans during the season has once again been exceptional and everyone involved with the club is fully committed to building long-term success in the right way.

“Dragan Solak continues to support the club financially and is proud of its ability to remain competitive while operating within financial regulations, which is important for the club’s long-term stability.

“Our focus is completely on tonight’s game. Now is the time for all of us to support the team and create a special atmosphere at St. Mary’s.”

“Given the density of the game schedule and the short turnaround time between games, we requested time to complete that process thoroughly and responsibly.

“While we understand the debate and speculation that has ensued over the past few days, we also believe it is important to establish the full context before any conclusions are drawn.

“I have spent a considerable amount of time around this football club so I know the character of the people there. The togetherness shown by players, staff and supporters throughout this season has been a huge part of our progress and I am confident that spirit will continue.”

“This season marks another important step for the football club. We know there is still more work ahead of us and we are still far from where we ultimately want to be, but the solidarity shown in difficult moments continues to define Southampton Football Club.”
