Manchester United are considering a surprise signing for Real Madrid loser Federico Valverde. The Uruguayan found himself frozen in the Spanish capital after a training ground spat with teammate Aurelien Choameny, who is also a United favorite. The incident resulted in Valverde needing hospital treatment for a concussion and was unable to play in the remainder of the match.
Real’s vice-captain was forced to issue a public statement and apologized profusely. However, club leaders remain furious with the midfielder and are understood to be open to letting him go this summer. Complicating matters further, Real dressing room bosses have rallied behind Choameni and are calling for Valverde to be shown the door ahead of next season.
United are closely monitoring developments at the Bernabéu. The Premier League giants are keen to strengthen their midfield options this summer and have previously expressed interest in Choameni. However, the French World Cup winner is reportedly reluctant to leave the Spanish capital given the support the club gave him after his clash with Valverde.
It remains to be seen whether Valverde himself is willing to move to United, but the Uruguayan international’s contract runs until 2029, and it is likely that he will incur a hefty transfer fee.
United have made signing two top-quality midfielders a priority this summer. Casemiro is set to leave Old Trafford at the end of this season, with United also expected to sell Manuel Ugarte to the highest bidder. Possible targets include Elliott Anderson, Carlos Baleva, Adam Wharton, Choameni and now Valverde.
Valverde, 27, has 73 international caps and is set to represent Uruguay at this summer’s North American World Cup.
