A footballer is fighting for his life after he and his club’s manager were injured in a horrific car crash in which a car plowed into people on Saturday. Emergency services were called to Market Place in Arnold, Nottinghamshire, just after 1pm on Saturday after reports that a red Vauxhall Astra had hit several people.
Woodthorpe Park Rangers FC later confirmed that three members of the club, including the manager, were hit by a vehicle while the team was out celebrating their end-of-season awards. In a statement published in Nottinghamshire Police said the incident followed an “altercation” in the town center a short time earlier. Officers confirmed that one man suffered life-threatening injuries, and four other men suffered minor injuries.
Police said the car was abandoned at the scene and the driver fled on foot.
A 40-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Barrow, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are sharing this important update with the family of the seriously injured man, who are being supported by specialist police officers.”
“We ask the public not to speculate about the circumstances of the incident and respect the privacy of those involved. Our investigation is ongoing and we strive to remain unbiased while such an extensive investigation continues.”
“We would like to thank the public for sharing information with us but also wanting to hear from others who can help.
“Anyone with relevant dashcam, CCTV, doorbell or mobile phone footage should also get in touch and share this with our investigation team. All road closures in the area have now been lifted and we would like to thank local people for their understanding.”
In a statement, Woodthorpe Park Rangers FC added: “We all wish our much-loved player well and are supporting each other in any way we can.
“We are all suffering right now and are asking for privacy and respect to understand what has happened. This is a heartbreaking and terrible time for our club.”
