Former Southampton defender Jan Bednarek was threatened with a knife by a robber in a terrifying incident on Friday night. Bednarek helped Porto win the league title last weekend, but his celebrations came to an abrupt end when his home was broken into.

Last weekend, the 30-year-old scored the winning goal as Porto beat Alverca 1-0 to clinch their first title in four years. His elation this week as he celebrated his accomplishment was dashed.

Portuguese newspaper Record reported that Bednarek and his family returned home around 9:30 on Friday night and found someone inside the house. Mr Bednarek was then reportedly threatened with a knife by his assailant, who fled with items worth around 150,000 euros (about £129,000).

The Polish national team player and his wife have a young daughter and had previously gone to an art exhibition. The comments below the Instagram post are filled with congratulations from supporters.

Bednarek signed for Porto in July, ending his eight-year spell at Southampton following their relegation from the Premier League. He appeared in 254 games for the Saints and was a revelation for his new team.

The centre-back has made 48 appearances for Porto this season, scoring four goals, and is partnering with international teammate Jakub Kivioglu in defence. Kivior left Arsenal in the summer and has been a mainstay in the defense, conceding just 15 goals in 32 games and one domestic defeat.

Porto were led to the title by 37-year-old Italian manager Francesco Faglioli and club president Andre Villas-Boas, a former Chelsea manager.

“I’m very emotional. I’m very happy for everyone,” Farioli said after the team’s 1-0 win against Alverca last weekend.

“For this group, for the people who work here, for Jorge Costa, for the president, for the people here…everyone deserves a title like this that hasn’t been there for a long time.”

Bednarek will not be looking forward to this summer’s World Cup after Poland missed out on qualifying for the 48-team tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Poland lost to Sweden 3-2 in the tournament playoffs, but Viktor Gökeres scored a dramatic winning goal in the closing stages.
