Marcus Rashford helped propel Barcelona to the La Liga title as the Catalan giants clinched the title with a win over Real Madrid in El Clasico. Rashford scored a stunning free-kick to give Barca the advantage at the Camp Nou after just nine minutes.
There are few occasions more memorable than achieving such a victory over the fiercest enemy. Although Los Blancos had experienced episodes of internal discord leading up to the encounter, Barcelona remained focused on achieving victory and marched towards success on Sunday night.
Former Manchester City player Ferran Torres extended Barça’s advantage and helped Rashford realize his ambitions. The United academy graduate had a goal in mind when he joined the club last summer, and he achieved it in spades.
“I want to win the biggest trophies and feel that Barcelona is a huge club in football and it’s the perfect place,” Rashford said at the official presentation. “Last season’s team was young and ambitious, so I want to add my qualities and personality to improve the team and help them win.”
After Rashford found the back of the net against Real Madrid, he was mobbed by his team-mates and made his way to Hansi Flick’s dugout amid celebrations. The 28-year-old has consistently made clear his desire to extend his time at Barcelona.
Rashford made 47 appearances during his time at the Catalan club, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists, earning him considerable praise from manager Hansi Flick. Rashford’s wages are a major stumbling block, so Barça could still favor a cut-price transfer or a further loan deal.
However, last month it was reported that Rashford had “no plans whatsoever” for his future beyond remaining at Barcelona. The forward is said to be “established and valued by a team that he considers to be the best in the world,” and it seems unlikely that that sentiment will change after tonight’s performance.
Rashford is also reported to be prepared to cut his salary by almost half, and tonight’s symbolic impact could strike a chord with those hoping to extend his stay. Either way, his performance will be welcome news for Manchester United.
His contribution could increase the chances of Barça activating their option to sign him on a permanent contract, and even if they don’t, he has definitely established himself firmly in the shop window. A year after being left out of United’s squad completely, he has enjoyed a full season with a performance that will allow him to maximize the transfer fee his parent club can afford.
The only remaining concern is that Rashford only has one year left on his contract.
