Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has admitted the club have big questions over the future of high-flyer Michael Carrick at Old Trafford. The Brazilian feels that the interim head coach is fully deserving of being appointed as Ruben Amorim’s permanent successor.

Carrick led United back to the Champions League after a year without European football and transformed the club from a team struggling in the Premier League. During that time he has won games against Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

He also has the highest winning percentage (71.4%) of any manager since Alex Ferguson. Several of United’s star players were behind Carrick to cheer him on, with Casemiro, who is due to leave the club in the summer, being the latest player to do so.

Asked about Carrick’s future, Casemiro said: “The club will have a big problem on that front, right? Because we know he came in as caretaker manager, came in, got results and played difficult games.”

“He’s done very well, he’s done very well, he’s a guy who knows the club, he knows what Manchester United is about. He’s got class, he’s got a Manchester United attitude, he’s a great person and he deserves it and he deserves to stay.”

“In my opinion, he’s a man who deserves it. When you know him day-to-day, you already think, ‘This guy deserves it.’ He has class, he lives and breathes the club, he knows what the club is about.

“So, for me, this guy should stay at the club for many more years, because he deserves it, he really deserves the job.”

Asked about his future in Thursday’s pre-match press conference, Carrick said: “We’re also looking to finish the season on a strong note. So I understand the question and I understand the timing, but from my perspective, at this stage we’re just putting the players in a position to finish the season on a strong note and then, as I’ve said all along, I’m calm about that.”

“When it’s resolved, it’ll be resolved, and some things are out of my control, so we’ll see how it goes. But I think I’ve said it from the beginning, we’ve never been one day closer here in terms of short-term decisions.”

“I don’t know if it’s different than other people see it, but from me, and certainly from the staff, I think we definitely made a long-term decision about the group and the individuals as players and how we treat them and help them and the team grow.”

“So, actually, I don’t think it changes the approach that I’ve tried to approach things.Again, I understand that maybe it’s for me and others who are looking at us, whether it’s the players, whether it’s the supporters, whether it’s all of you sitting here.

“I don’t know how it’s going to change, maybe we’ll see, I don’t know. But certainly, from my perspective, I think I’ve done it and worked on it in a way that I think is the right way to do it.”
