Former Manchester United star Scott McTominay could help gift his former club with a big transfer kitty boost

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay could lead Napoli to the Champions League this weekend in a potential windfall move for his old club. Gli Azzurri will be obligated to pay United £38m for Rasmus Hjølund if Antonio Conte’s side qualify for Europe’s elite competition next season.

Hoylund joined Serie A on loan from United last summer, with the Italian paying a transfer fee of £5.2 million. However, if Napoli secures qualification for next season’s Champions League, the transfer will become permanent.

The Serie A powerhouse is currently in second place with 70 points. This means they could qualify if they beat Bologna on Monday night and fifth-placed Roma fail to beat Parma on Sunday.

McTominay has played a pivotal role for Napoli since joining in the summer of 2024. The midfielder’s side look set to lose out on the title to Inter Milan this season, but the Scot’s form has helped Conte’s side maintain second place in the table.

If he performs well again, the Italians could secure European football next season. The £38m United are set to receive from Napoli for Hojlund should go a long way in United’s extensive and costly summer rebuild.

United are thought to be a priority target to replace Casemiro, who leaves the club, now that he has qualified for the Champions League. Candidates include Nottingham Forest’s Elliott Anderson, Brighton’s Carlos Baleva, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes, Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Wolves’ Joao Gomez.

Aston Villa attacking midfielder Morgan Rodgers is also reportedly being considered for a move as cover for Bruno Fernandes should the United captain wish to leave next season. Real Madrid midfielder Aurelian Choameny and RB Leipzig winger Yann Diomande have also been rumored.

The club are said to be looking to sign a left-back again this summer, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall and Arsenal youngster Miles Lewis-Skelly being named.

Hoylund arrived from Atalanta for £72m and scored 16 goals in all competitions during his debut season with United. However, former manager Ruben Amorim removed the Dane from his plans soon after, despite featuring him during pre-season before his departure.

Speaking in the United States during United’s 2025 summer tour, Hojlund expressed his determination to fight for his place, but was subsequently left out of the matchday squads against Arsenal, Fulham and Grimsby at the start of the campaign.

United put Hojlund up for sale after signing Benjamin Sesco from RB Leipzig for £73m in August. Hoylund, who has scored 14 times for Napoli this season, reflected on his departure to TV2 in March.

The player said: “I got what I wanted with the transfer: I got a team, a club, a sporting director, a president who have a lot of faith in me, and a coach who wants me.”

“At one point I felt like my time[at United]was over. Here in Napoli, I rediscovered my love for football. Even the people back in Denmark looked down on me, but I never stopped believing.”
