Arsenal legend Ian Wright was upset after Gary Neville claimed Manchester City may not be punished for their financial dispute with the Premier League.
Arsenal legend Ian Wright could not believe Gary Neville’s suggestion that Manchester City could go unpunished in a funding dispute with the Premier League. The former Manchester United defender has claimed Josep Guardiola’s side could be exempted from 115 charges.
Mr Neville admitted it was “ridiculous” that the case had not come to any fruition after City was counter-sued in February 2023. An independent commission investigated the incident in December 2024, but the results of the hearing have not been made public.
City were charged with breaching financial rules over a nine-year period between 2009 and 2018, and were also charged with further offenses relating to failing to co-operate with the Premier League investigation. The club strongly denies any wrongdoing.
In Overlap, Mr. Wright strongly criticized the fact that no results had been obtained from the public hearings. He said: “You have to remember that we[Arsenal]are chasing City, but we’re still talking to them about the charges. ‘How did they do this? How did they get to do that?'”

“The result is not yet. We don’t know the result yet and that is the team we are chasing.”
City dropped a point against Everton and Arsenal regained top spot in the Premier League, but Josep Guardiola’s side still have a chance of winning the league.
Wright felt that the charges had affected the Premier League title race and transfer business in recent years. He feels that even if the charges are not related to the recent season, Arsenal will not be able to build a squad in the way City have done in years past.
Neville pointed to past accusations leveled against Everton and Nottingham Forest, saying: “At some point it’s going to come clean and it’s a shame it’s taken this long. It’s a real shock. Other clubs have been punished too, but they could get away with all the charges. I know they kept quiet about it, but they can do it.”
“Really?” Light replied. “Every time you get charged, you say, ‘I can’t believe this happened, but let’s keep going.’ It’s not 5 or 6. It’s 115! I feel like everyone here is Donald Trump. No one’s listening. You’re saying too much, but that’s stupid!”
“I’m with you, Righty,” Neville replied. “It’s ridiculous and shocking that 115 serious charges have not been brought forward.
“What I am saying is that there is an old and important principle in this country that you are innocent until proven guilty. In my opinion, the level of guilt or guilt has not yet been found. I think these charges relate to before 2020, but what you are saying is that the foundations of the current team were laid during that period.”
“That’s true, the players signed up for the success we’ve had and we want that success as well,” Wright said.
“It would be great if they can prove that everything is fine, but I’m not going to sit here and watch my club struggle to beat this time like Goliath with everything that’s going on.”
