Liverpool could be eyeing a new left-back following Andy Robertson’s departure, with former players naming Lewis Hall, who could replace Milos Kerkes, as an ideal target.

Lewis Hall has been outstanding for Newcastle this season.

Manager Danny Murphy has urged Liverpool to sign another of Newcastle’s top stars in Lewis Hall ahead of a potential summer at St James’ Park.

The Magpies have been underperforming this season, putting pressure on Eddie Howe and it looks like they will miss out on Europe. There is talk of some of their key players leaving as the club wants to remain financially compliant but feels the impact of the absence of European football.

The Merseysiders lost Alexander Isak to Anfield last summer and are in desperate need of a left-back, who has been his best this season.

Liverpool are set to lose powerful Andy Robertson this summer when the Scottish player leaves at the end of his contract, and Murphy doesn’t think there are many better left-backs out there.

He told Betarades: “It’s probably unlikely to get him because (Sandro) Tonali and (Anthony) Gordon are likely to go, but if Newcastle have to sell and they are able to compensate for him, even if they have to pay him a bit more, he’s still a young player, he has Premier League experience and I think he’s been one of Newcastle’s bright lights this season.”

“There are a lot of great left-backs that are not worth mentioning. I don’t think we would pry them away from PSG or Bayern Munich. They are at some of the biggest clubs in the world so you would want to grab them and take them away, but I don’t know.”

Liverpool spent £40m on a new left-back last summer, signing Milos Kerkes from Bournemouth. The Hungarian is never at his best and Murphy is not convinced he has what it takes to become a regular in a trophy-winning side, so he could be on the market again.

He said: “Kerkes is a tryr but he’s improving, but is he at the level that Liverpool need to win the league title and the Champions League? My feeling is he’s not. He’s probably a substitute, probably a reserve. Now, when you have 60 games in a season and you’re playing in all competitions, you can’t just win one game. But he’s not better than Andy Robertson.”

Newcastle could lose at least one of Tonali or Gordon, with Bayern Munich keeping an eye on the latter. There was little noise around the exit of the hall, although Bruno Guimarães, another promising player, frequently spoke publicly of his desire to remain at St. James’ Park.
