With huge investments made during the summer transfer window, Liverpool supporters were hoping for a solid title defence, along with good results in other competitions. However, the Reds were unable to continue their good run and would relinquish the Premier League title before the end of the season.
Arne Slott spent a staggering £446m last year to strengthen his squad, bringing in the likes of Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkes. Despite this extraordinary spending on new recruits, the reigning Premier League champions are on track to finish below fifth and qualify for the Champions League. With several areas of the squad in need of rebuilding and injuries affecting key players throughout the season, Liverpool will be desperate to make a dramatic turnaround in fortunes in 2026/27.
Let’s take a look at where Liverpool could reshuffle their squad this summer…
Alisson had an unfortunate season with injury setbacks, suffering multiple hamstring issues and a concussion.
Despite this, the experienced shot-stopper has put in some impressive performances for Liverpool and remains hugely popular within the squad, making him a strong candidate to stay despite recent rumors linking him with Italian side Juventus.
Giorgi Mamadashvili proved to be an excellent replacement for the goalkeeper role, making 16 appearances between the posts before being sidelined towards the end of the campaign due to a knee problem.
Alisson is now 33 years old, so the Georgian is expected to stay and develop as Liverpool’s new first-choice keeper.
Meanwhile, Freddie Woodman is seen as likely to stay on beyond this campaign as a highly-touted back-up option.
Joe Gomez also represents another player who has battled injury issues this season, missing eight games due to various illnesses.
Given his limited opportunities in the starting line-up and his long stay at the club, it seems likely that the defender will be moved on to accommodate new reinforcements.
Club captain Virgil van Dijk was a major force in leading the club through a turbulent season. According to reports, the Reds will be looking for a long-term replacement for the Dutchman this summer, but he is widely expected to stay on to help the new signing settle in.
Ibrahima Konate is another star player who has been heavily rumored to be leaving Anfield. The defender is currently set to become a free agent this summer, but the club are working hard to sign him to a new contract.
Real Madrid are said to be interested, and he recently confirmed that an extension is almost complete.
Milos Kerkes is one of Slot’s summer recruits, but he has yet to start his job seriously at Liverpool. The left-back, who replaced Andy Robertson in his starting position, had faced criticism for mistakes in previous games. He remains a player the Reds are keen to develop in the future.
Connor Bradley performed well in the slot until a serious knee injury cut his season short. He is expected to remain at the club and could establish himself as another Anfield hero in the coming years.
Giovanni Leoni was just at the start of his Liverpool career when his debut season ended prematurely due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury. He is one of the players who is almost certain to stay and will hopefully return to the pitch showing the same quality he showed in September.
Vice-captain Robertson has confirmed he will leave Liverpool as a free agent this summer after spending the better part of a decade at Anfield. The Scotland international is attracting interest from a number of clubs keen to sign him up, including Premier League rivals Tottenham.
Jeremy Frimpong joined Liverpool in the summer and has established himself as a regular in the starting XI this season. He hopes to continue exploring silverware in England.
Young defender Calvin Ramsey has only appeared in two cup games for Liverpool this season. A loan move could be on the cards to secure more regular first-team play and leave his mark in the future.

Wataru Endo faces a race to be selected for Japan’s World Cup squad, but there is still much to be expected from his performances for Liverpool this season. The 33-year-old has appeared in just 12 games so far this season and appears to be on the verge of another exit.
Florian Wirths had a difficult time at Liverpool, drawing considerable criticism throughout his debut season. The German has struggled to reproduce the brilliant form he showed during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, but will remain at the club next season to prove himself under manager Slott.
Standout performer Dominik Szoboszlai may be linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer, but Liverpool will be determined to keep the dynamic playmaker at Anfield.
He has been outstanding in the center of midfield and will be the basis on which to build for the next campaign.
Alexis Mac Allister is another player rumored to be leaving Anfield this summer. The Argentine has not achieved the heights expected this season and is struggling along with the rest of the squad.
However, there have been no concrete discussions with rival clubs, and the 27-year-old’s contract with the club runs until the summer of 2028.
Negotiations over Curtis Jones’ new contract have reportedly stalled for several months, with multiple clubs interested in the midfielder ahead of a potential summer departure.
He has made an impressive 46 appearances for Liverpool so far this season and has been an important figure, but he could be on the move in the coming weeks.
Ryan Greifenberch signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool earlier this year, keeping him at Anfield until 2032. Following this extension, it is highly unlikely that he will leave the club in the summer, and the club is expected to build their midfield around him along with Szoboszlai.
Teenage talent Trey Nyoni broke into the first team this year and made 13 appearances for the first team in domestic and European competitions. He has attracted attention and is seen as a future star, with potential summer signings suggesting he could be considered for a loan move for further development.
Stefan Bicetic has not played for Liverpool in the last two years due to injury and a loan spell from the club. With his name barely featuring in the club’s future plans, it looks like the 21-year-old will either be loaned out again or sold this summer.

Alexander Isak was Liverpool’s marquee player last summer, and his arrival on deadline day for a fee of £125m raised many eyebrows.
He is expected to remain with the club and will be hoping for a more productive sophomore season after his first season was interrupted by a broken foot.
Hugo Ekitike, another summer signing, was Liverpool’s spark this term, contributing 23 goals before suffering a serious injury against PSG.
However, a ruptured Achilles tendon will keep him sidelined for up to 12 months, meaning he will miss part of next season and the upcoming World Cup.
The Reds will support the devastated Frenchman in his efforts to recover from the big blow.
Mohamed Salah will leave Anfield as a legend after nine years with the Reds. The Egyptian player has established himself as a modern-day icon, winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League, and cementing his place in third place on the club’s all-time top scorers list.
Federico Chiesa became Slott’s first signing for Liverpool in 2024 and was hailed as a £10m steal from Juventus.
However, the Italian international has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield and was tipped to leave in January. It is likely that he will step down this summer in order to promote new players.
Kodi Gakpo has proven his reliability this season and is expected to be on Liverpool’s roster next season.
The Dutchman provided a rare moment of encouragement in the Reds’ loss to Manchester United at the weekend and could provide value across attacking positions.
Rising talent Rio Ngmoja is only 17 years old but has already proven he is capable of meeting the demands of Anfield.
At 16 years and 361 days old, the teenager became Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer, scoring in a 3-2 win away to Newcastle. He will be the future of the slot, but is expected to remain to secure a spot in the starting lineup.
