Rio Ferdinand has responded to Jamie Carragher by bringing up their shared history with England internationals as part of their feud following Manchester United’s win over Liverpool.
Rio Ferdinand reminded Jamie Carragher that he “used to carry my boots” as his feud with the England international escalated after Manchester United’s win over Liverpool. Two high-profile former players clashed on social media after United’s 3-2 win in the Premier League on Sunday.
Koby Mainu’s goal at Old Trafford secured bragging rights for United as they completed their first league double against their rivals since 2015/16. The move means United qualify for next season’s Champions League and puts more pressure on Liverpool manager Arne Slott.
As a result, smoldering tensions between Ferdinand and Carragher came to a boil. The beef resurfaced in 2004 when Ferdinand tweeted a photo of himself enthusiastically celebrating teammate Mikael Silvestre’s goal against Liverpool in front of a dejected Carragher, writing: “With caption.”
Carragher took the bait and replied: “Get a little pissed off, Scouse–perhaps…it’s not like you to make sure you’re in someone else’s goal photo. Now you’re continuing this ritual by wandering around the mixed zone, harassing star players and asking your men to take pictures!”

Ferdinand decided to fight back on his YouTube channel, “Rio Ferdinand Presents.” He said: “Jamie Carragher may have woken up on the other side of the bed. Did anyone see what he wrote back to me? I thought it was really, really harsh.
“I just posted a picture of me celebrating a goal. That’s what happens in games like this, you celebrate the big moments. I scored a couple of goals in the game against Liverpool. But instead of posting the goals I scored, I posted the ones I celebrated.”
“I love to celebrate and he really tried to hit me. I don’t know why. I don’t know what’s rubbing him the wrong way. He spat out the dummy. Spit out the feather.”
“He used to be my teammate on the England national team. He used to carry my wash bag (…) He used to carry my boots sometimes when I was in the stands without changing.
“I always thought we got along well. I’ve known him since we were at school (…) It’s just that people react differently to this game. In the game against Liverpool we were on the receiving end and lost, which is not good and feels bad. And today, Man Utd, they did it.”
The two sides have clashed before, with Carragher labeling Ferdinand a “clown” in 2013 as a pundit during the 2013 Champions League semi-final between Inter Milan and AC Milan.
Regarding hostility, Ferdinand said: “Every time I see him, it’s all love. I don’t understand why he came with hostility. We meet and it’s all cool (…) He’s always shown me love. I’m cool, but when you look at me, I just need to see that energy again.”
