FC Porto and Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa impressed the late Liverpool star and his brother Andre
Diogo Jota’s widow Lute Cardoso has paid a heartfelt tribute to FC Porto goalkeeper and captain Diogo Costa at the club’s title celebrations. Last July, the world of football was devastated when Jota and his brother Andre tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Spain.
Jota had returned to Liverpool for pre-season training after undergoing minor lung surgery in Porto. He had originally intended to fly back to the UK, but on the advice of medical experts he chose to take the ferry back from Santander.
The heartbreaking death came just days after the Portuguese forward married his long-term partner Lute, with whom he had three children.

On Saturday, Porto faced Alverca in La Liga, knowing they could clinch their 31st league title with a draw or win after dropping points from both Sporting Club de Portugal and Benfica. The team won 1-0 and during the post-match festivities Costa was spotted wearing a Porto shirt with Jota’s name and number 19 on it.
“(This is) for our Portistas (Porto fans) and for our dear Diogo Jota and his brother. He was my national teammate, but he also played here,” the Portuguese keeper told reporters afterwards.
“We knew he was a great portista and we would like to dedicate this league trophy to him, his brother and his family.”
In a separate interview with Sport TV, Costa said: “There are many things I want to say and remember. Our Jorge, our president, personally Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva… I feel a mixture of sadness and happiness at the same time.”
“When I woke up this morning, I felt as if I knew something good was going to happen. Because I think we deserved it and we did everything for it.”
It has been a testing 12 months for Porto on and off the field. It is marked by the passing of Jota, Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, who led the club for 42 years and was its long-time president, and Jorge Costa, its most famous captain and one of its most iconic figures.
Jota is a huge loss for Liverpool, with the club saying in its latest report published in March: “The club is deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of first-team player Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. Their deaths have had a significant impact on the club, the world of football and supporters around the world.”
“In accordance with financial reporting standards, the club expects to recognize a financial impact in the reporting period to 31 May 2026, including a £14.4m impairment of Diogo’s remaining registration costs and other related costs.
“While this financial assessment is necessary for financial reporting purposes, it does not reflect the immense personal and professional loss the club has experienced.”
During his time at Anfield, he won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup, and also won the Nations League twice with Portugal.
Following his death, Liverpool officially retired his number 20 shirt as a mark of respect.
