BBC Sport presenter Natalie Pikes has revealed she quit broadcasting after a message from her four-year-old daughter became “burned” into her memory. For 13 years, Pikes was one of the leading figures on national television sports, but he has decided to step down to spend more time with his loved ones.

Pikes has covered four World Cups and as many Olympics in his role with the company. The presenters’ social media profiles are interspersed with interviews with star players and camera footage from sports stadiums and nearby major landmarks, with idyllic backdrops. But a drawing by her 4-year-old daughter stopped her in her tracks and sparked a realization about her demanding role.

The photo shows a pregnant Ms Pilks lying on her back and using her mobile phone. In an accompanying Instagram post, she said, “In two weeks, I’ll be quitting the job of my life. Here’s why: After over 20 years in broadcasting, 4 World Cups, 4 Olympics, and countless major finals.”

“By all accounts, I was successful, but my daughter once painted me a picture that is seared into my memory.

“I was lying down[while pregnant]working on my phone, and she was only four years old. And she was right. On paper, it was a success. She was right.”

“You’re spinning plates in real life. You’re getting the job done, but you’re your own harshest critic, you’re missing out on important moments with your family, and you’re wondering if this is really the right thing for you? Okay. You get it.”

“What the last few decades have really taught me is this: Work is the most important of the least important things. I’m running towards balance and presence, using all the skills I’ve learned over 25 years in the media industry.”

“Do you ever feel like you have a completely different life? Still ambitious and have a lot to give, but want more peace in your work? Let me know in the comments if I’m not alone. If you can relate, follow me. The best is just beginning…”

Many industry experts and sports broadcasting luminaries came out to support the Pikes. During his time in front of the BBC’s cameras, Pirks has covered England men’s campaigns in major tournaments as well as coverage of the Lionesses’ Euro 2022 victory.
