Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand have been attacking each other via social media for years, but now the former Manchester United and Liverpool defender is hitting back again.
Jamie Carragher has reignited his war of words with Rio Ferdinand after criticizing the former Manchester United star’s media career. The two have regularly exchanged blows in recent years, sparking a feud.
And there is no end in sight after Carragher responded to X’s Ferdinand’s post on Sunday, hours before his old team clashed at Old Trafford. The former United defender shared a photo of himself enthusiastically celebrating teammate Mikael Silvestre’s goal against Liverpool in 2004, adding: “Caption this.”
Carragher can be seen in the foreground of the photo, with Ferdinand shouting at him. The Liverpool legend replied to the post: “‘Eat some of that bullb, Scouse xxxx’ Probably…
“It’s not like you to make sure you’re in someone else’s goal photo. You’re now continuing this ritual by wandering around the mixed zone, bothering star players, and asking your subordinates to take pictures!”

Ferdinand, who currently lives in Dubai, will leave TNT Sports in May 2025 and dedicate his commentary to his own YouTube channel, “Rio Ferdinand Presents.” The 47-year-old interviews football legends past and present and gives his opinion on the latest football news.
Mr Carragher, who also works for CBS Sports and the Telegraph, appears to be furious with Mr Ferdinand’s approach. The two pundits have argued over topics such as Cristiano Ronaldo, the Saudi Professional League, the African Cup of Nations and Mo Salah.
In 2023, Carragher names Ferdinand “Clown”. During the Champions League semi-final between Milan’s rivals Inter and AC, Carragher mocked Ferdinand for calling his controversial penalty call a “stonewall” despite it being overturned by VAR. When Micah Richards asked him to name him, Carragher replied: “Rio Ferdinand. I’m happy to call you Clown.”
In response to the abuse, Ferdinand said: “Every time I see him, he’s a loving guy. I’m a loving guy, I hug him, I shake his hand, I smile a little bit. I don’t understand why he came in so hostile. It’s a hostile energy and I don’t understand it.”
“He’s been on our show, we’ve been meeting and it’s all cool. He used to carry my boots when we were in England, he’s always shown me love.
“Maybe it was Hall of Fame week (in the Premier League). Me and him were cool, so that’s all I can think about. We chat and sometimes text, but I just don’t get it. I have nothing but good energy for him.”
“He messages me all the time. That’s what I’m saying, it’s crazy for me. He messages me all the time, we played together in the England team and like I said, he carries my boots. He’s always shown me love.
“I don’t know where that energy comes from. And all I want him to tell me is where that energy comes from. Is it real energy? I need to know, so I’ll ask him when I meet him.”
