Liverpool have fallen to their 11th Premier League defeat of the season against arch-rivals Manchester United, but Arne Slott has had some strong words following his team’s recent turnaround.

Arne Slott has admitted big changes could be coming for Liverpool following their dismal title defense. The Reds came from behind to lose 3-2 to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, their 11th Premier League defeat.

Liverpool endured a miserable first half against Manchester, with goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesco putting the home side in the lead. Mistakes led to goals for Dominik Szoboszlai and Kodi Gakpo.

However, United ultimately clinched the victory thanks to Koby Mainu’s performance. After the match, Slott was particularly dejected and suggested big changes could be made at Anfield in the summer to get the club back on track.

He told Sky Sports: “Yeah, I don’t think anyone expected us to lose that game at 2-2. Or maybe we will after the whole season.

“As we’ve shown many times this season, when we’re playing well or when we think we can win, we switch off. The ball fell to Mynu and it was a great finish for them.”

Slott further added, “In terms of being able to win games like this, the difference is not that big. We know what we can improve on and we are already working hard. The same problems keep coming back, but we don’t have much time to fix them during the season, so it’s not that surprising. Tactically we can change some things, but for me it’s clear where we have to improve and we will do that.”

The Reds will likely spend a lot of money for the second year in a row if Liverpool bring in a number of new players to the club this summer.

However, United icon Gary Neville claimed it contributed to the club’s underperformance this season. He said: “I think there’s definitely an element of Liverpool, but you can’t rewrite history of what everyone thought at the beginning of the season when everyone expected Liverpool to win the league, or come close to it.”

“We probably had them in either number one or number two. If you look, they wanted Frimpong instead of Alexander-Arnold, they wanted Kerkes instead of Robinson. They wanted Salah to repeat the season this year. They thought Ekitike and Isak would score 60 goals between them and Wirtz would push in from the left and be a sensation.”

“It didn’t work out. The reinforcements didn’t work out and obviously there were some injuries. I think from last season they were trying to replace players that they knew were aging and players that they knew other than Ekitike were coming in and weren’t settling in.”

“Kerkes and Frimpong were nowhere near the level of Alexander-Arnold and Robertson who were in top form. Salah was nowhere near the level that Mo Salah was before.

“Ekitike and Isak are probably nowhere near the level of Dias, Jota, Firmino or anyone from a few years ago. They’re just not used to the players they signed yet. I don’t know if it’s a really bad situation for Liverpool or if they need to be patient and allow these players to emerge next season and become real players.”
