Live broadcast of Saturday’s 3pm kick-off using soccer power outage loophole

Why 24 Saturday kick-offs at 3pm will be broadcast live on Sky Sports

Final day schedule: This Saturday is the final day of the regular campaign for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, with all matches starting at the same time at 3pm. This synchronization ensures the integrity of the sport and ensures that no team gains an unfair advantage by knowing the outcome of another before taking the field. Sky Sports contract: Under the existing 2024-2029 broadcast contract, Sky Sports retains the right to show all EFL matches on the final day of the campaign. This “full slate” coverage is a key feature of the Sky Sports+ platform, which allows for dozens of simultaneous live streams. Loophole in the 50% rule: The UEFA-sanctioned blackout only applies if 50% of matches in the top two divisions (Premier League and Championship) are scheduled for Saturday at 3pm. Since today is the last day, authorities have adjusted the schedule to avoid reaching this threshold. CHAMPIONSHIP TIME CHANGES: To avoid potential power outages, all matches on the final day of the Championship have been rescheduled to a 12:30pm kick-off. By bringing these 12 games forward, they no longer count toward the 3:00 p.m. “block time” calculation. Legal blackout lifted: Less than 15% of the top two divisions will be playing in the afternoon slot, as the Championship ends early and only three Premier League games are played at 3pm. This means the FA cannot legally enforce a blackout for matches kicking off at that time. Impact on the Premier League: Although the legal blackout has technically been lifted, Premier League matches such as Brentford v West Ham at 3pm will still not be shown on British television. This is because the Premier League’s domestic rights were sold in a specific package that explicitly excluded the Saturday 3pm slot. Protection of lower leagues: Blackouts are usually implemented to protect ticket sales and spectators at smaller clubs. However, given that many League One and League Two teams will be competing in the most important matches of the campaign at the same time, the EFL will prioritize global and domestic ‘full-slate’ accessibility. Technology infrastructure: Sky Sports+ allows broadcasters to host 24 simultaneous feeds without the need for separate TV channels. This technology has made it possible to turn the final day into a ‘red button’ style event for all supporters across the country.
