Restore Britain leader Rupert Law has won support from former Chelsea captains John Terry and Dennis Wise on his controversial policy to ban foreigners from claiming benefits in the UK. The pair have faced some backlash for expressing support for the former Southampton boss.

Mr Lowe has become an outspoken political operator, having resigned twice – once in 2005 when he oversaw Saints’ relegation and again in 2009 when Southampton Leisure Holdings came into power. The 68-year-old left Nigel Farage’s Reform Party to set up Restore with ambitions to deport illegal immigrants, protect British culture and restore Christian principles.

Lowe outlined one of his positions in a social media post. “We should ban foreigners from claiming benefits and weed out immigrants who cannot support themselves financially. We should use the billions of dollars we save to cut taxes for the British men and women who keep our economy running,” he said.

“If we’re going to bring Britain back, we’re going to do just that and put our own people first. Finally.” Former Blues and England star Terry seems to strongly support this position. In a comment, he said, “100% yes.”

Former Millwall and Leeds United manager Dennis Wise also doubled down on his support, commenting “200%”, and there was some backlash to both positions.

One social media user said: “Cool. If John Terry and Dennis Wise stand for something, it’s probably best to be on the opposite side of them. Thank you.”

“Strangely, they seemed like such lovable and caring characters,” another user added. Another X user said, “There are two idiots.”

“I wonder how the usual ‘ex-footballers should shut up and stick to football’ crowd will feel about this,” another opined.

This is not the first time Terry has supported an MP for the Great Yarmouth post. Chelsea’s academy coach appears to have agreed with Lowe’s wish to ban the burqa.

Lowe was recently shut down by Congress after he expressed his desire to ban foreign nationals from claiming benefits. He claimed that £10.1bn of the 2024 Universal Credit payments had been “gifted to foreigners” and asked whether the solution was to “ban all foreigners from claiming benefits, remove from our country immigrants who cannot support themselves financially and return that money to British men and women who are taxpayers”.

Undersecretary of State for Change Andrew Western mocked Mr Lowe’s use of numbers and highlighted the problems with Mr Lowe’s position. The Labor MP said: “It shows his ignorance if he does not understand that the figures he used are a complete mix-up, a gross overstatement and it is impossible to suggest that all that money was paid directly to foreigners.”

“The figures he is using are derived from the total number of households with foreign nationals, and many individual claimants may actually be British or Irish.”
