Newcastle United and England legend Alan Shearer has jokingly criticized his daughter’s then-boyfriend after her memorable accident at last year’s London Marathon. Shearer was quick to praise Chloe’s fiancé, rugby star Micky Young. Micky Young was called up to the England squad in 2016, but did not feature. But as well as playing for England Saxons, he has also represented his country in the Sevens format.
This year’s race is scheduled for Sunday, but it seems unlikely to be as memorable as last year for the Shearer family. Shearer was cheering on her son Will, who was one of the runners. Young, meanwhile, had planned to spend Saturday night watching Newcastle’s win over Ipswich Town and attend the race with his entire family.
However, things didn’t quite go to plan and Shearer revealed Young’s disastrous failure on The Rest is Football.
Co-host Gary Lineker brought up Will’s participation in the marathon and asked how Shearer found the opportunity.
“I have to say it’s unbelievable. The atmosphere and the togetherness of everyone that creates this great (atmosphere). Yeah, to be honest, everyone seems so happy,” he said.
“I have to tell you a quick story about my eldest daughter Chloe and her boyfriend, a former rugby player and ex-Newcastle Falcons player, who has been dating her for several years.
“He went to the Newcastle game yesterday and we were all here so we were going to catch the 5.59pm train from Newcastle to London to watch and support Will.
“So he got to the station, got there five minutes early and got on the train. After 15 minutes on the train, he heard an announcement: ‘Welcome to everyone on the train to Edinburgh. And it was non-stop all the way to Edinburgh.’

“So he was going to[come to London]but he had to go from Newcastle to Edinburgh and that was the last train he could take.
“He had to get to Edinburgh, so he looked at different modes of transport, planes and cars. He took the damn Megabus from Edinburgh to London, which cost £30, and arrived in London at 6.45am this morning.
“So I told him, ‘You’re going to be taking care of my shitty daughter in the future!'”
Co-host Micah Richards laughed as the former England player replied:
Mr Shearer continued: “To be honest, I said, ‘Really?'” And he said he had stopped in Dunbar, Newcastle, Leeds and Sheffield, and I said, “Oh, you idiot!”
This year’s London Marathon will be held on Sunday. The famous 46.2 mile road race starts at 8.50am, with BBC coverage beginning at 8.30am and broadcast on BBC Two at 2pm.
