York City scored a surprising equalizer in the 103rd minute and won the National League title in a dramatic winner-take-all conclusion to Rochdale. The Minstermen went into stoppage time at Crown Oil Arena with the trophy in hand and had secured a draw good enough to secure promotion. However, as time grew shorter, the match descended into complete chaos.

Rochdale scored a wonderful goal with a header from Mani Dieselvwe in the 96th minute, sparking wild celebrations and an invasion of the pitch. If Dale won, he could be promoted to champion, and he believed he had a decisive winner. Veteran striker Ian Henderson came off the bench and provided a moment of brilliance.

The 40-year-old curled the ball towards the far post with the outside of his boot and Diesel Vwe rose highest to head it past York City goalkeeper Harrison Mehle.

Rochdale supporters rushed onto the pitch to celebrate the title win. After a five-minute delay, fans were removed from the pitch and play continued.

York then pushed their players forward and won the title in dramatic circumstances with Josh Stones scoring a controversial equalizer in the 103rd minute.

Callum Howe’s header was cleared on the line but the ball fell to Stones at the far post. He pushed the ball towards goal, but there was some doubt as to whether the ball crossed the line, with York players claiming that it did.

Officials conceded the goal and traveling supporters rushed onto the pitch. Scenes of absolute chaos ensued as York players, staff and fans celebrated wildly on the sidelines.

York manager Stuart Maynard told DAZN at full time: “They were saying ‘York time’. Before Rochdale scored, it was ‘Rochdale time’.” There is a real sense of belief and togetherness in this camp.

“You have to look at the fans behind us. When I first came in, I said we all have to be in this together. The players are warriors.”

“When they scored, they came to the dugout and told us we had another chance. There was a real belief inside of us and that kept us going.

“Everything went well. Everyone went forward, but there was no one behind. Kick, throw, throw forward. With this group, we know they’re going to keep running until the end, and they deserve it.”

“Look at the players behind me. They are amazing. They work tirelessly and hard every day. We are one big family and I love them all.”

Rochdale now have to dust themselves off and refocus ahead of the National League play-offs. Jim McNulty’s side will advance to the semi-finals with a bye and will face either Scunthorpe United or Southend United.
