Mohamed Salah played his final game for Liverpool limping with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. A few weeks ago, Salah announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season.
His emotional announcement sparked the start of his Reds’ farewell tour. This afternoon, in his final game as a Liverpool player, his most recent opponents were Crystal Palace. However, the Eagles may have been their last opponent after the Egyptian player went down with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. He was quickly replaced by Jeremy Frimpong and the iconic forward looked on emotionally as the home fans applauded.
Former Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood, who was watching the match, admitted he became worried as soon as he saw Salah go down. He told Sky: “I’m worried. This could be the last time I wear a Liverpool shirt with my hamstring injury.”
“Frimpong is going to play, but if he has a hamstring injury, it doesn’t look good. It wasn’t when he was running. He was trying to pass the ball and I saw him pull himself up and grab his left hamstring.”
“This is the end of Mohamed Salah in a Liverpool shirt. What a sad end. He’ll get a great ovation. What a shame, what a shame. There’s no way he’ll be back for the last game against Brentford.”
The Reds’ iconic midfielder Steven Gerrard also said he believed the injury appeared to be severe. The former Liverpool captain said: “Yeah, I hope not.”
“As Joe says, we don’t really know the extent of it until the medical team actually diagnoses it and gets an MRI scan.
“But if that is the case and this is his last game, it will be very sad, not just for Mo but for everyone associated with Liverpool Football Club, because he is a legend and everyone would like to see him get the sending off he deserves.”
If this is Salah’s last stand, he will leave Anfield at the end of this season, having scored 257 goals and provided 122 assists in 439 appearances. Additionally, Salah will leave having won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, Champions League, Club World Cup and two League Cups.
