Tottenham Hotspur hero Chris Hughton has spoken out about his battle with prostate cancer after undergoing surgery to remove it.

The 67-year-old was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year. He underwent successful surgery to remove his prostate and is now cancer-free.

He was able to catch the disease early and is now passionate about raising awareness about the disease. “The news certainly didn’t scare me. I know it’s different for everyone, but my first impression was ‘It’s okay,'” Hughton said. I didn’t immediately think, “This is probably going to kill me.” All I thought was, “Okay, I have to do what I have to do.” ”

Routine health checks by the League Managers Association helped identify early warning signs for Hughton, who was placed in the “high risk” category as a black man over 50 with a family history of illness. I then underwent blood tests to get a definitive diagnosis before starting treatment.

He added: “I received very good advice and all the treatments were offered to me, so I decided to have my prostate removed. My recovery is going very well. It’s been a year since the surgery and I’m feeling great. Everything is going very well. I have a lot of energy.”

“It’s part of my personality to stay active and busy anyway, but it’s also rehabilitation and keeping my mind active. I’m very happy with my prognosis and how I’m feeling post-surgery. I’m in a really good place.”

Hughton is an iconic figure at Tottenham Hotspur, making 398 appearances for North London during his career. He also coached the team three times as interim manager.

Hughton also had spells at Newcastle United, Norwich City, Birmingham City, Brighton and Nottingham Forest. Hughton helped the Seagulls win promotion to the Premier League in 2017. He managed 169 games in the top flight for Newcastle, Norwich and Brighton.

His most recent role was with the Ghana national team, which ended in January 2024.

The former defender, who made 53 appearances for Ireland during his playing days, was recently linked with a return to his former club Tottenham as manager following Igor Tudor’s disastrous tenure as manager.

However, the north London side have appointed fellow former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi in his place, tasked with steering the club away from relegation in the final week of the season.
