Scott Parker’s team lost to title-chasing Manchester City and were officially relegated from the Premier League, making it their third relegation in five seasons.
Burnley lost to Manchester City and were relegated from the Premier League. The Clarets become the second team to be relegated to the Championship after bottom club Wolves sealed their fate on Monday night.
Scott Parker’s side needed to avoid defeat to title-chasing City on Wednesday night to avoid relegation in their next game.
However, the loss leaves them with 20 points, 13 behind West Ham in 17th place, with four games remaining. Burnley have won only four of their 34 games this season and have just two points from their remaining 24 games.
They are three points clear of Wolves, meaning avoiding bottom of the table is Parker’s side’s last ambition. Parker’s side are now the ultimate yo-yo side between the divisions, having been relegated from the Premier League for the third time in five years.
Burnley played in the Premier League for five consecutive seasons before going through the trapdoor in the 2021/22 season. Despite winning promotion and returning to the top flight the following season under coach Vincent Kompany, the Belgian was unable to prevent relegation in the 2023/24 season and moved to Bayern Munich.
Parker is currently following the same pattern as his predecessor, winning promotion from the Championship last season with 100 points and an excellent defensive performance, but quickly plummeting as the leap in quality became too great.
Parker has managed to keep his job, but suffered a defeat against Nottingham Forest on Sunday when his team surrendered a 1-0 lead at half-time to lose 4-1.
“I’m a fan myself, so I understand the passion and emotion, but it was a disappointing season.” “Sometimes we didn’t give them much support, and sometimes I thought it would have been better if the general had come up behind us, but I don’t really expect that.”
