Raheem Sterling’s stay at Feyenoord will not extend beyond this season, it has been reported. The winger signed for Feyenoord in February after leaving Chelsea.

However, the former Liverpool star has yet to impress in his new surroundings and his future is once again up in the air. He was heavily criticized by the Dutch media after a 0-0 draw with FC Volendam earlier this month.

Director Robin van Persie is also frustrated. “These two worlds have to come together sooner rather than later,” the former Manchester United and Arsenal striker said after Sterling was sent off in last month’s draw with Ajax.

“We’re working on that. The most important thing is to win games at this time when Raheem is getting more and more fit. So I respect and recognize where he’s coming from, but at the same time we have to deliver as a club.”

“We have to finish second, it’s very simple. I believe he’s progressing in terms of fitness and in terms of what he offers. At the same time, I want to see more impact off the ball and more impact on the ball.”

It appears Van Persie’s patience has reached its limit. After starting the final four league games, Sterling sat on the bench in the Eredivisie draw against NEC Nijmegen and did not appear on the pitch.

Tobias van den Elshout was replaced in the lineup, with Dutch media claiming he was “making his presence felt”. He added that a decision had already been taken not to extend Sterling’s contract beyond the summer.

Feyenoord currently sit second in the Eredivisie, 19 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven. The club returns to action on Saturday when they host Groningen (3.30pm kick-off).

Sterling said of his move to Feyenoord: “As a free agent, I had the opportunity to take control of the next step of my career for the first time in a while. I wanted to take the time to speak to the club and head coach to better understand the role they envision for me and ensure I can add real value in the next chapter.”

“Having discussed this in detail with Robin, I am confident that Feyenoord is a place where I will be happy and where I can establish myself as an important member of the team. Playing abroad is a completely new challenge for me and I am ready to accept it.”

“Honestly, I’m excited to get started. I would like to thank Feyenoord for their patience and professionalism as we move through this process.”
