Burnley lost against Manchester City and were relegated from the Premier League. The Clarets become the second team to be dropped from the Championship, following bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers, whose fate was sealed on Monday night.
Scott Parker’s side needed at least a draw against title-chasing City on Wednesday night to keep their hopes of survival alive going into their next match.
However, with this defeat they are stuck with just 20 points, leaving them an astonishing 13 behind West Ham in 17th place with four games remaining. Burnley have won just four of their 34 league games this season and have only picked up two points from a possible 24 games.
They are three points clear of Wolves, meaning the fight to avoid the wooden spoon is the only objective left for Parker’s side, who have now been relegated to the Premier League three times in five years and cemented their reputation as the ultimate yo-yo club.
Burnley competed in the top flight for five consecutive seasons before falling out of the Championship in 2021/22. They bounced back quickly under coach Vincent Kompany, but the Belgian was unable to stop a slump in the 2023-24 season and departed for Bayern Munich.
Parker now mirrors the trajectory of his predecessor. Last season, they jumped to promotion to the championship with an astonishing 100 points and terrible defensive performance, but they were unable to respond to the significant improvement in quality and fell straight back.
Parker managed to hold his place, but hit a low on Sunday after his team lost a 1-0 lead at half-time, losing 4-1 to Nottingham Forest. ”
“I’m a fan too and I understand the passion and the emotion, but it was a disappointing season. At times we didn’t give them much support and at times I would have liked more for the Generals to get behind us, but I don’t really expect that.”
