Dominik Szoboszlai has been negotiating a new contract with Liverpool for months, but the Hungary captain has admitted that no progress has been made behind the scenes.
Dominik Szoboszlai has hinted that his long-term future lies with Liverpool, but admitted contract talks are stalled behind closed doors.
Szoboszlai’s EM Sport representatives have been in talks with Anfield bosses over a new contract in recent months, with the Hungary captain currently tied to the club until 2028.
Liverpool are keen to secure the No. 8 on a long-term deal given the progress he has made on Merseyside over his almost three-year spell so far, but speaking after Sunday’s 2-1 win over Everton, Szoboszlai admitted there was still a long way to go.
“As I said (a few weeks ago), there has been no real progress,” Szoboszlai said. “So I can’t say anything new about my contract situation. I still have a lot of games left so I’m focused on that.”
“As you all know, my contract ends in 2028, so I’m ready to go every day, every week. And then we’ll see. Obviously, I think I’m here for the long term, but like I’m saying, it’s not really in my hands anymore.”

“As I’ve said many times, I love being here. I love the fans and I really love being here. My family is happy. Now, I’m completely relaxed. There are still five games left. Then I’ll rest. After the international break, it’s an important game. Then we’ll see.”
Szoboszlai provided the assist for Virgil van Dijk for the winner at the Hill Dickinson Stadium as Liverpool won their first Merseyside derby at Everton’s new home with a 100th-minute goal.
After Mohamed Salah’s opener was canceled out by Beto, Van Dijk headed home from Szoboszlai’s corner and the Reds midfielder celebrated his first double against the Blues since 2022.
He added: “The support of the fans, it means a lot. Every time they chant my name, it means a lot. I think we were able to clarify what happened against Manchester City at the Etihad.”
He added: “It felt great. We had quite a few corners and chances, just like they did. But to win a derby like this in the last second, you couldn’t have asked for more.”
“We were both happy to get the three points, but also happy for the fans because we know what it means to them and winning the derby means a lot to us as well.
“It’s been a long time (since we won the derby away in 2021).Also, last season we didn’t win away, but we did this season. I’d rather win like this than 3-0 or something like that!”
“It’s more fun to watch this way, and I think it’s also true for the fans of both teams. Maybe they were unlucky in the end, but I’m glad we got the three points.”
The win puts Liverpool in fifth place in the race for the final Champions League spot, seven points ahead of Chelsea, with the two teams set to meet at Anfield next month. “Winning always changes the atmosphere, but we have to stay on the floor and continue to work hard every day,” Szoboszlai said.
“We have to keep fighting to qualify for the Champions League and it’s going to be a tough game. It’s always difficult when you play against teams that are close to us, like Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace. We have to always be ready and fight for them.”
“I think[Arne Slott]is right that Liverpool have a bright future. We’ve brought in new players, young, talented players.
“We know what they can do and that they can help the team. That’s why they’re here. I’m really looking forward to playing with them in the next five games, obviously, and hopefully in the future as well.”
