Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has questioned whether Eddie Howe will continue as manager next season, his comments leaving the former Magpies manager extremely angry.

Manager Sam Allardyce has spoken out to Alan Shearer after the Newcastle legend suggested Eddie Howe is “not considering” taking charge of the Magpies next season.

The former Bournemouth manager has won plenty of plaudits for his excellent work since taking over at St James’ Park in November 2021, and also led the club to their first domestic trophy in 70 years just over 12 months ago. But scrutiny has increased on Howe following a punishing campaign that saw Newcastle lose 15 games in the Premier League and finish in the bottom half of the table.

Shearer questioned the 48-year-old’s position after watching Howe’s speech after Newcastle’s defeat away to his former club on Saturday.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said: “It’s tough for Eddie, but you never know what’s going to happen to him. I listened to the interview afterwards[after the Bournemouth defeat]and watched him on the touchline and I was wondering, does he want to go again? Will he have a chance to go again?”

“All things being equal, I would like him to stay, but does he feel he has a chance? Does he want to do it again? Should Newcastle United be sold?”

There has been speculation about Howe’s future after Newcastle’s performance this season has fallen well short of expectations, but Shearer’s comments have not gone down well with Allardyce, who believes the Toon Army legend was completely off the mark.

“He’s completely out of form,” Allardyce slammed on the latest edition of the Footy Accumulators No Tippy Tappy Football podcast. “He’s just doing it to make himself popular again with Newcastle fans and he should know better than to do that.

“Just to be clear, he’s a critic, so he has to maintain his reputation. And if you’re a critic, you have to criticize, right?”

“Eddie probably knows[the end is coming],” the former Newcastle and Sunderland manager continued. “We all have a lifespan. Sir Bobby Robson was one of the best players, but even he was unlucky.

“No matter who you are, if you don’t do well, everyone fails and everyone moves forward.”
