Chelsea leave Liam Rosenior in a ‘difficult position’ questioning his future as they concede goals

Chelsea’s disastrous run continues with Saturday’s loss to Manchester United, with Liam Rosenior’s future under the microscope and a top-five finish now in doubt

Liam Rosenior sees Chelsea lose again, leaving top-five hopes in limbo

Liam Rosenior saw Chelsea lose again, ending their hopes of finishing in the top five.

Glenn Hoddle believes Chelsea will stick with Liam Rosenior for now despite suffering another defeat. This is another big blow to their Champions League hopes.

The 41-year-old Blues have lost six of their last seven games, with their only win coming against Port Vale in the FA Cup. They have only won one of their eight league games in the Premier League, but they need to work hard if they want to break into the top five.

As a result, Rosenior, who replaced Enzo Maresca in January, has been given more attention. The former Strasbourg manager has already won support from fans amid talks of a new manager.

Chelsea’s American ownership has sacked four managers in four years, but Hoddle believes Rosenior will retain his faith for now, but if his form continues next season his fortunes could be over.

He told Premier League Productions: “They’re in a really tricky position. For me, for Liam to stay in the job until the end of this season, I think they’ll give him that opportunity, but he’s got to finish on a good note and he’s got to get some wins.”

“The reason they brought him in is because he is a young manager and part of their project, if you want to use that word, and I think they will give him that chance. But he will have to start winning. Even if they don’t qualify for the Champions League, they are in the FA Cup semi-finals so there is still a chance of actually winning trophies.”

“I think they’ll stay with him, give him a preseason and start with him, but he’s going to need to start next season in a positive way. Otherwise I think he could be in a bit of a dangerous situation.”

Chelsea’s fan base has had to accept a new reality after being serial title challengers for 20 years under manager Roman Abramovich. Since then, they have only toned down with the Champions League as their new mandate.

Failure to do so would have previously resulted in the manager being sacked, but Rosenior is unsure what that means for him. “I don’t know the honest answer,” he said. “The honest answer is we’re still fighting and whatever the situation is, we’ll deal with it at the end of the season.”

Several players could face an uncertain future if they miss out on Europe’s top table, with Enzo Fernandes one of the most high-profile players considering leaving.
