Elliot Anderson has paid a touching tribute to his mother following her heartbreaking death, calling her “the most special person”. The England midfielder missed Thursday’s Europa League game against Porto due to Nottingham Forest’s death.
Director Forest released the following statement: “Elliott Anderson will be unable to compete tonight due to the passing of his beloved mother Helen.
“Everyone at Nottingham Forest Football Club would like to extend our deepest condolences to Elliott and his family following this very sad news. Our thoughts and hearts go out to the Anderson family at this difficult time.”
And Anderson posted numerous images and touching messages on social media. It read: “Mom, you are the most special person I have ever met.

“Every day you laughed, laughed, and danced, giving us all so much joy and happiness. You fought so hard this past year with so much strength and resilience.
“I was incredibly proud of the determination you showed and am forever grateful for everything you have done for our family.
“You gave our sons the best life, and we were ready to give it all back. All we wanted to do was make you proud. I know you look down on us and watch everything we do.”

Anderson’s Forest teammates paid tribute to the midfielder during the Europa League victory over Porto. After Morgan Gibbs-White’s goal, the team celebrated by holding up jerseys with Anderson’s name and number on them and the message, “Family comes first. We’re all in this together.”
Gibbs-White spoke about Anderson in an emotional post-match interview. “It was a really emotional night. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. He’s a great kid. No one deserves this, no one. But we’re all with him.”

Anderson, 23, has been at Forest since joining from his boyhood club Newcastle in 2024. Since then, he has made 83 appearances for the Midlands side, establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
Anderson began his England career while at the City Ground, winning seven caps for the Three Lions. He looks very likely to be included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for this summer’s World Cup.
