Former Liverpool and Barcelona star Javier Mascherano helped Inter Miami win the MLS Cup last season, but the Argentine has decided to end his spell at the club after less than 18 months.
Javier Mascherano has left MLS side Inter Miami due to personal reasons, the club announced. The Argentine was appointed to the MLS team in November 2024 and helped the club win the league title last season.
Aided by David Beckham’s ownership and Lionel Messi’s incredible form, Mascherano led Miami to their first MLS Cup. They defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps in the final, but just over four months after that game, the 41-year-old decided to leave.
“I would like to inform everyone that due to personal reasons I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF,” Mascherano said in a statement published on the club’s website.
“First and foremost, I would like to thank the club for their faith in me, all the employees who gave their all as part of the organization, and especially the players who made it possible for me to experience some unforgettable moments.

“I would also like to thank the fans and La Familia, because without them none of this would have been possible. I will always carry with me the memories of our first star and will continue to pray for the club’s progress wherever I am.”
“I have no doubt that the club will continue to enjoy success in the future. I send everyone a big hug and thank you for everything.”
Commenting on Mascherano’s decision to leave, Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas said: “Javier will forever be part of the history of this club and will always have a special place in the Inter Miami CF family.”
“Not only did he play a key role in unforgettable achievements such as winning the MLS Cup and the team’s historic performance at the Club World Cup, but he also set an example through his dedication and daily work leading the team.
“We respect his decision, are deeply grateful for all of his contributions, and wish him the best for his professional and personal future.”
Mascherano finished the season with seven games, winning three of them and leaving the club in third place in the Eastern Conference. They will next travel to Colorado Rapids on Saturday night to return to action.
After Mascherano’s departure, Guillermo Hoyos will take charge, but it is not yet known how many games he will manage.
