England fans will flock to New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium for the World Cup in July, but return train tickets will cost significantly more than usual.

Fans attending the World Cup in the US this summer will be forced to shell out a staggering $100 (£73.69) for a round-trip train ticket from New York’s Penn Station to MetLife Stadium.

Home to the New York Giants and New York Mets, the impressive 82,500-capacity venue will host eight games at this summer’s World Cup, including the final on July 19 and England’s final group game against Panama. Unfortunately for supporters planning to attend the match in New Jersey, train tickets will cost more than seven times what they cost for last summer’s Club World Cup final.

This comes as a new report from The Athletic reveals that New Jersey’s transportation agency, New Jersey Transit, plans to charge fans significantly more than the $12.90 (£9.51) it normally costs for a round-trip ticket for an 18-mile journey.

A new special event price will be applied to the tournament, and a final decision on costs will be made in the next day, the report added.

A New Jersey Transit spokesperson told the newspaper, “Ticket prices for game-day travel have not yet been determined and any mention of cost is unconfirmed speculation.”

“However, as the Governor made clear in his press conference with the New Jersey Department of Transportation this morning, the cost of eight games will not be borne by people who regularly commute to work.”

Parking at MetLife Stadium is expected to be significantly reduced compared to Giants and Mets games, potentially impacting tens of thousands of fans.

New Jersey isn’t the only state to drastically increase travel prices ahead of the 2026 Games, which will be hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico, with the City of Boston also confirming it will charge passengers $80 (£58.97) for the trip to Foxboro’s Gillette Stadium, four times the usual $20 (£14.74).

This will also have an impact on England fans as Thomas Tuchel’s side face Ghana in their second group game in Massachusetts. The opening match against Croatia will be held at Dallas Stadium in Texas.
