Liverpool will bid farewell to Mohamed Salah this summer after nine years of prolific goalscoring, but there are already internal discussions about his replacement.
Dominik Szoboszlai has backed Arne Slott’s claim that last summer’s big-money signing to replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool next season should be held accountable. Liverpool are preparing for life without Salah after the 33-year-old announced he would leave the club at the end of the season.
Salah has scored 256 goals and provided 122 assists in 437 games for Liverpool, and despite a dip in form this season, he has still managed to score 11 goals and provide nine assists in 36 games across all competitions. Liverpool have struggled at times this season in attack, with performances marred by fitness issues and a lack of consistency.
Alexander Isak signed for £125m in the summer but has barely featured, while fellow new signings Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirths have yet to consistently achieve the heights Liverpool had hoped for. Szoboszlai says the attacking trio will have to step up to bat if Salah leaves the club next season, as he has been out for the season.
“You can mention Mo, but he won the Premier League for us last season with those numbers,” Szoboszlai told Prime Video ahead of Tuesday night’s second leg between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain. “He knows that maybe he’s not at this level now. Maybe people expected more from the (new) players that came in.

“But it’s not that easy to come to the Premier League. I can’t remember a player who came directly to the Premier League and didn’t have a setback. We need to give them time and give them confidence. And believe me, if they have time and confidence, they will be needed in Liverpool’s future.”
The Liverpool midfielder’s words echo those of the manager, who spoke of the “impossible” task of filling in for Salah earlier this month. “Of course,” Slott said when asked in early April if Liverpool were planning on filling in for Salah.
“We’re not starting to work on it now, because we’re always working on things we can improve on. “This hasn’t been talked about too much, but it was the 88th minute when Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirths were on the pitch together.
“First of all, let’s look at and think about how it all works together. That way we can get even more out of it. There’s never just one player who can replace Mo. Otherwise, there would be 15 or 20 Mos, but he’s a unique player. That’s why he’s special. You can’t find a replacement for Mo. Maybe you can, but he won’t be available.”
He added: “It’s probably impossible to replace Mr. Mo one-on-one.” Therefore, we have to find a way to make the team work so that it becomes stronger, but if Alex, Hugo and Florian can play more than 88 minutes together this year, the team will already be much stronger. ”
