After Manchester United lost to Leeds United, Michael Carrick was furious, describing the decision to show Lisandro Martinez a red card as “one of the worst I’ve ever seen”.

Martinez was shown a straight red card for pulling Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair. Referee Paul Tierney was instructed by the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) to watch what happened on a pitchside monitor and showed him the red card.

Martinez has been suspended for the next three games and will miss games against Chelsea, Brentford and Liverpool. Mr Carrick said Mr Tierney’s decision was “shocking” as Mr Tierney had also contested the challenge against Lenny Yolo.

“We didn’t start the game very well,” United’s interim head coach told Sky Sports. “We conceded a goal after Lenny Yolo hit us with a forearm to the back of the head.

“They didn’t make the decision to turn it around, and that was the big moment of the game. We just didn’t quite get our rhythm and didn’t get going. We had some moments, but we didn’t have that for the majority of the first half.”

“After the shocking decision to send Richa (Martinez) off, I thought the players thought positively and played as hard as they could in the second half. That was the second game in a row where the decision went against us, but that game was one of the worst I’ve seen.”

Tierney announced the decision to the Old Trafford crowd, saying: “After consideration, Manchester United No. 6 was found guilty of violent behavior by pulling his hair. The final decision is a red card.”

Former United full-back Gary Neville said at the time: “Martinez looked confused and confused. ‘What have I done?'”

“He pulled his hair and now he got a red card. He knows what he’s doing there.”

But Carrick disagreed, claiming Calvert-Lewin initiated the contact that led to his sending off. “Obviously you could elbow Lenny Yolo in the side of the head, the dominant arm,” he said.

“Then he throws his arm at Richa’s face and he loses his balance because of that and it half touches the back of her hair, so it pulls her bob and it looks like this: I don’t even know what that looks like.

“It wasn’t a tug, it wasn’t a pull, it wasn’t aggressive. He just touched it and got sent off. The worst part is that he got sent off to cover it up as a clear mistake. It’s shocking.”
