Jadon Sancho will have to accept a significant pay cut if he wants to return to Borussia Dortmund this summer.

Sancho will leave Manchester United as a free agent when his current contract expires in June. A number of clubs have expressed interest in signing the former England winger.

However, former club Dortmund are understood to be leading the race to sign the 26-year-old. Sancho has produced some of the best football of his career during his three years in the Bundesliga and is keen to return to Dortmund.

However, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke is said to have made it clear to Sancho that his club would not be able to match the current £250,000-a-week wages in English football.

This means Sancho would have to accept a contract on wages of close to £150,000-a-week to secure a move to Dortmund. Sancho is keen to turn his back on the Premier League and head to Europe in the hope of rekindling his flagging career.

Sancho joined United from Dortmund in 2021 for £73m. He was expected to play a big role in United’s bid for another big trophy.

However, the switch to Old Trafford turned out to be a nightmare for both sides. At the start of the 2023/24 season, he was banned from United team training following a public row with then-manager Erik ten Hag.

He returned to Dortmund on loan in the January transfer window and helped them reach the Champions League final.

Sancho returned to United ahead of the following season, but despite clearing the air at The Hague, he was allowed to join Chelsea on a season-long loan. However, he failed to impress and was loaned back to Aston Villa at the start of this season, where he also failed to make an impact.

Sancho feels that a fresh start in the familiar surroundings of Dortmund will help him rediscover his best form and love for the game. Sancho has won 23 caps for England and was part of the team that reached the final of Euro 2021.

However, he has not played for the Three Lions since October of that year and is keen to secure regular first-team football to improve his chances of an international call-up.
