Arsenal and Manchester United are both interested in signing Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, but the Magpies will only sell the midfielder this summer if a deal is completed on their terms

Newcastle will sell Sandro Tonali only on terms

Newcastle are adamant their interest in Sandro Tonali will not develop into a major story and hope a future deal with the Arsenal and Manchester United target can be completed at the start of the summer.

The 25-year-old Italian midfielder has emerged as a transfer target for some of Newcastle’s domestic rivals after an excellent season. And just months after his surprise link with Arsenal materialized on the final day of the winter transfer window, talk of Tonali leaving St James’ Park for another Premier League club is accelerating.

Tonali, valued by Newcastle at nearly £100m, is said to have interest from the Gunners, United and Manchester City.

However, a new report from The i Paper claims that any interest in the playmaker’s services would need to be registered with the Magpies at the start of the summer, and he is likely to only be allowed to leave if a deal is struck on Newcastle’s terms.

And it includes Tonali’s suitors agreeing to meet Newcastle’s financial demands, meaning any deal for the former AC Milan star is likely to be one of the biggest deals of the summer.

Newcastle are preparing to overhaul their squad in the transfer window, with an early sale giving them a bigger idea of how much money they can spend in relation to the Team Cost Ratio (SCR) rules.

The Magpies were hampered last summer by speculation over Alexander Isak’s future, with interest from Liverpool continuing until the final hours of the deadline. The striker was ultimately sold for £125m, with the club keen to avoid any overlap with Tonali or other stars, having attracted significant interest in the likes of Tino Libramento, Bruno Guimarães and Anthony Gordon this year.

Manchester United are preparing for an explosive summer with plans to revamp their midfield, with Casemiro’s transfer already confirmed and potentially two new signings in that area.

The Red Devils are set to appoint a new permanent head coach ahead of the 2026-27 season, but a number of names have already been floated, with Brian Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha impressing last year as part of the new attack, and the Red Devils have benefited from operating domestically.

Arsenal are also expected to be active in the summer window, but an exodus will also be necessary, having spent £250m last year to give Mikel Arteta all the tools he needed to end his more than 20-year wait for a domestic title.
