Joey Barton is back in custody after being refused bail and is believed to be captaining the prison football team while losing weight

Joey Barton has lost weight and is captain of his prison football team, according to his podcast co-host with the former Manchester City star who is awaiting trial.
The 43-year-old is accused of attacking father-of-two Kevin Lynch, 51, at Huyton and Prescott Golf Club on March 8. He was charged with assault causing serious injury and has been in custody since March 10. Burton has pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Burton appears to be using his time to lose weight and is also captain of the football team. The former soccer player’s Common Sense Podcast was recently recorded without him after his co-host shed light on his time in prison.
The podcast co-host, known as Kambo, said: “He’s lost a little weight, played a little football, kept himself active. He’s a hell of a machine. I can tell you a story about one of my buddies, Joe. His buddies are in prison with him.”
“My companion’s companion was in the library with some young people, and Joe was walking through the library and said, ‘Boss, please bring me a book.’ It was his autobiography. It was definitely Joe.”

Barton, who was refused bail at an earlier magistrates’ court hearing, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court via video link from Liverpool Prison for his plea and trial preparation hearing. The 43-year-old was further remanded in custody and will face a seven-day trial starting September 1.
An earlier court hearing said the defendants had been drinking with Mr Lynch at a golf club before the alleged attack. Mr Lynch, a former non-league football manager and founder of special education school Nexgen Academy, is said to have suffered serious eye injuries.

Back in December, Barton was given a suspended sentence for sending grossly offensive messages to football pundits Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward, and broadcaster Jeremy Vine. The former Bristol Rovers manager targeted three victims on 12 occasions between early January and mid-March 2024.
He has publicly expressed a variety of opinions, including his disapproval of female commentators. In January 2024, he took to social media to refer to ITV football presenters Ms Aluko and Ms Ward as the “Fred and Rose West of football commentary” and compared them to two convicted serial killers.
