Jamie Carragher believes “terrible” Tottenham are doomed to collapse after Roberto de Zerbi’s first game as manager ended in defeat. Spurs lost 1-0 away to Sunderland in their first game since parting ways with Igor Tudor.

Tottenham, who are languishing in the relegation zone, are now two points clear with six games left after West Ham and Nottingham Forest both picked up points at the weekend. And Carragher can’t see De Zerbi, who was appointed on a five-year contract, turning things around.

“Normally when a new manager comes in, they say, ‘It’s his first game, we’ve got to take it (their style of play) out of the box,'” Carragher began on Sky Sports. “For Igor Tudor it had to go out the window, but it’s the same for Roberto de Zerbi because of the situation they are in.

“It’s unbelievable. Tottenham look like they’re going to lose. The other teams are doing something too. One point in 24 games. If you look at the game you would think it was a good game for Tottenham, but they were terrible.”

“Do you think Tottenham will go to Wolves, who are bottom of the league, and win? There’s no chance of that happening.”

De Zerbi’s scathing verdict highlighted Spurs’ challenge to avoid relegation for the first time since 1977. De Zerbi’s side will face Brighton, Leeds and Everton at home, before traveling to Wolves, Aston Villa and Chelsea before the end of the season.

Tottenham dropped to the bottom three as West Ham beat Wolves 4-0 on Friday. Forest also drew 1-1 at home with Villa, keeping them in 16th place above West Ham and moving one step closer to safety.

Evaluating the loss, De Zerbi said, “I think we played a good game. It wasn’t good enough to win, but we didn’t deserve to lose. We have to accept and move on.”

“We played a good game. We had enough quality to overcome this difficult moment. The result is disappointing. (Cristian) Romero’s injury is unfortunate. I hope it is not important for us or for him. We had three or four clear scoring chances.”

“We can be better, especially in terms of finding play between the lines. We made a couple of mistakes with 15 meters to go, so we have to move on to the next game. I spoke to the players five minutes ago and told them that we understand that it’s a very difficult season. It’s a difficult period for everyone and we have to respond with the right spirit. The quality of the players is great.”
