West Ham moved out of the relegation zone with a 4-0 victory over Wolves. Konstantinos Mavropanos and Valentin Castellanos each scored twice to give Nuno Espirito Santo’s side three points at the London Stadium.

Jarrod Bowen also provided two assists as the Irons moved Tottenham into 17th place. Spurs have a game away to Sunderland on Sunday, but they are now in the bottom three for the first time this season.

It will be Tottenham’s first match since new manager Roberto de Zerbi took over as manager, replacing Igor Tudor during the international break. And West Ham’s victory made De Zerbi’s task even more difficult.

Mavropanos, who scored the crucial equalizer in the Irons’ 1-1 draw with Manchester City last month, broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute when he headed in Bowen’s cross. The Wolves, with any hope of survival, tried to get back on parity in the second half until Castellanos scored two goals in the opening three minutes to end the game.

The Argentine striker joined from Lazio for £26m in January and has now scored five goals. However, it was centre-back Mavropanos who stole the headlines by scoring his second goal of the night from a corner kick by Bowen, using his strength to score his side’s fourth goal.

Wolves are not technically relegated, but they do find themselves 15 points clear of safety with six games remaining. Nottingham Forest and Leeds will also be left sweating over Friday’s result.

Forest are just ahead of West Ham on goal difference, with Leeds just one point behind. Forest host Aston Villa on Sunday, while Leeds face Manchester United on Monday.

Coach Mavropanos hailed the victory as a “perfect performance”. “A win like this is a big boost for the rest of the season, because we have been working hard,” the Greek international said on Match of the Day.

“We had very good results in our past matches, but today we showed a great effort together with our fans at home and kept a clean sheet. I think it was a perfect performance.”

“I told them that Wolves have good players and we have to be calm during the game. We all worked together to score the first goal, and in the second half we had more work to do and scored more goals.”
