Manchester United were recently linked with signing Nico Schlotterbeck, but the Borussia Dortmund defender, who has also been linked with Liverpool, has made a decision on his future.
Manchester United transfer target Nico Schlotterbeck has signed a new contract with Borussia Dortmund, the German club announced. Schlotterbeck, 26, is in the final year of his existing contract and Dortmund were likely to sell him this summer if no deal was reached.
According to reports from Germany, United are interested in a left-footed centre-back. Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Schlotterbeck amid growing uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate’s future.
However, Schlotterbeck decided to remain at Dortmund, where he joined from Freiburg in 2022. After putting pen to paper on a five-year contract, the defender said: “I’m really happy to have extended my contract with BVB.
“This is an important decision for me, so I intentionally took my time with this decision. We had a lot of discussion throughout, but it wasn’t a process that could be completed in just a week or two.

“The club officials have presented me with a good plan and I know what I have at this club. My goal is to win the title with Borussia Dortmund.”
Schlotterbeck is not the only defender United are interested in. The Red Devils have long admired Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite and RB Leipzig’s Castello Lucuba, both of whom are left-handed.
With the appointment of Michael Carrick as interim manager, United have switched from three centre-backs to two under manager Ruben Amorim. Harry Maguire and Lenny Yolo have been the first-choice pair of late, following injuries to Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez, with the latter close to returning for Monday’s home match against Leeds at Old Trafford.

“It’s good to have Richa around again,” Carrick said earlier this week. “Obviously Harry is going to miss the game (with suspension) so we want to get Richa back and get really strong as a group with Lenny and Aiden (Heaven). So that’s part of it and we’re trying to use this week to do that.”
United were attending a mid-season training camp in Dublin after almost a month of no Premier League matches. After facing Leeds, they will travel to Chelsea next Saturday in the biggest game for both teams to qualify for the 2026/27 Champions League.
