Andy Robertson has verbally agreed to join Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer this summer, according to reports. The Scotland captain will leave Liverpool after nine years at Anfield when his current contract expires at the end of this season.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claims the 32-year-old left-back has “verbally agreed” to join Spurs on the condition that they avoid relegation from the Premier League this season. West Ham’s win over Wolves on Friday night saw Spurs slip into the relegation zone.
The north London club inquired about signing Robertson during the January transfer window, but the Reds quickly rejected the approach.
It is now claimed that Robertson has an agreement in place to join Roberto Di Zerbi’s side as a free agent if the Italian manager allows him to stay in the top flight.
Spurs dropped to 18th place after West Ham’s 4-0 victory over Wolves on Friday night. They don’t travel to Sunderland until Sunday, so depending on their own result on Wearside and the results of other games, they could be entrenched in the drop zone this weekend.
Robertson had previously been linked with a return to his boyhood club Celtic, almost 20 years after being released as a 15-year-old.
Robertson admits the move has been frequently considered, but revealed there will come a time when he doesn’t want to make the switch and risk becoming a pale imitation of his former self.
“Every time I watch Celtic, I think about it. When I watch Celtic and I see a packed Celtic Park… as a fan you always have that dream. Ideally, I’d like to finish my career here at Liverpool. If I can stay at the top of my game and be at the top of the tree throughout my career, that’s the path I want to go down.”
“But I also watched Celtic and when I was growing up I wanted to give them my best year. When I was at Queen’s Park I still had dreams of playing for Celtic and I always dreamed of giving Celtic their best year.”
“And now I don’t want to be a 34- or 35-year-old guy who’s stuck and my uncles start hating me! Time will tell. I’m a man of the moment.”
