Alejandro Garnacho joined Chelsea following a messy divorce from Manchester United, but the Argentine attacker reflects on his final months in a red shirt
Alejandro Garnacho has shed new light on the circumstances behind the end of his Manchester United career, admitting he was partly to blame for things going sour at Old Trafford.
The 21-year-old winger had established himself as one of the club’s most exciting young players before his dramatic fall from grace at the club he joined as a teenager in 2020. It became clear that his time in Manchester was numbered due to a falling out with his former Red Devils head coach, and he was forced out by manager Ruben Amorim.
His long-term £40m move to Chelsea was completed in the summer, and back in December Garnacho insisted he had no regrets about ending up at United, saying: “Sometimes in life you have to change things to take a step forward, to improve as a player.”
“This was the right club and it was an easy decision.”

But four months later, the Blues attacker changed his tune while talking about his final months as a Manchester United player.
In an interview with Premier League Productions, he said: “I remember that in the last six months I couldn’t play as much as I used to at Manchester United. I started sitting on the bench, which is not a bad thing. I was only 20 years old, but in my mind I felt like I had to play every game.”
“In my mind, maybe it’s me too, I started doing bad things. But yeah, it’s just this moment in life and sometimes you have to make decisions. I’m really proud to be here with a club like this and still in the Premier League.”
When asked if leaving Old Trafford hurt, the Argentine star said: “Yes, maybe so, because I loved that club, right? They gave me confidence from the beginning in Spain, took me to the academy and then to the first team. So it took about four or five years, but the fans, the stadium, the great love from everyone, everything was really good.”
“Sometimes you have to change for the sake of life or for the next step. I have only fond memories of Man United.”
