Arsenal are closing in on their first Premier League title in over 20 years but look set for a summer of change whether they win silver or not

Mikel Arteta wants assurances that Arsenal will continue to back him through contract extension talks as the Spaniard and the Premier League leaders prepare for another important summer.

Arteta, 44, re-established the Gunners as one of the Premier League’s elite sides during his time with the north London outfit and is on track to win their first domestic title in more than 20 years with just a few games remaining this season. And both sides are looking to the future, given Arsenal’s measurable progress under Arteta, who finished second in the Premier League for the third consecutive year.

According to a report from BBC Sport, negotiations between Arteta and club executives over a new contract have already begun, with the terms of the Arsenal manager’s current contract, which is worth £10 million per season, running until 2024, with less than 12 months remaining.

Negotiations are said to be “moving in a positive direction”, but it is notable that Arteta is understood to be seeking assurances that the club will continue to receive the level of support it has enjoyed in recent years.

Other aspects of the negotiations, such as Arteta’s new salary, will need to be finalized in the coming months, but the club are also focused on the upcoming summer transfer window.

Arteta has been well-backed in recent years to build a squad capable of challenging for major honours, and after spending more than £250m in last summer’s window, a major departure and even more new contracts are on the cards.

The club is willing to listen to offers for academy graduates Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, despite both players signing new long-term deals last year. Lewis-Skelly has fallen down the table this term, while Nwaneri was loaned to Marseille in January. The proceeds from selling both players count as “pure profit” in accounting terms.

Members of the senior team, including Gabriel Martinelli, have also been considered. The Brazilian has scored just one goal in the Premier League this season, with Arsenal fanatics of Aston Villa’s Morgan Rodgers.

Gabriel Jesus is another player who could be sold, along with Ben White. Both are likely to require large transfer fees.

Despite speculation to the contrary, one player who is likely to remain at the Emirates beyond this season is Martin Odegaard. The Norwegian midfielder has come under intense scrutiny during Arsenal’s title challenge, but Arteta is keen to retain his captaincy.

Arsenal are looking to strengthen at full-back and other positions, and while they are big fans of Tino Libramento, they are also interested in two of his Newcastle teammates Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon.
