Liverpool have announced that long-serving defender Andy Robertson will leave Anfield when his contract expires this summer.

Robertson, 32, joined Liverpool in 2017. Although negotiations broke down, there was speculation that he would be allowed to leave before the contract was signed, and there were rumors of a surprise move to Tottenham in the January transfer window.

However, he will be leaving the club in the coming months, with the Premier League champions confirming the news on Thursday night.

“Liverpool FC can confirm that Andy Robertson will end his Reds career at the end of this season,” a message posted on the club’s official website read.

“After nine highly successful seasons at Anfield, the Scotland captain will leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

“He will do so as a true Liverpool legend, having made 373 appearances and playing a fundamental role in our success in recent years.

“Robertson, signed from Hull City in 2017, has won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and the League Cup, as well as the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Community Shield.

“However, any celebration of Robertson’s achievements at Liverpool will be firmly on hold until the end of the campaign, with the number 26 now fully committed to helping the Reds complete the 2025-26 season as successfully as possible.”

Robertson added, “I think I’ve felt better since we’ve been open. Certainly the hardest thing over the last few weeks and months has been the fact that some of the people that are close to me on the practice field don’t know, and more importantly the fans.”

“The closer we get to the game, the more and more questions I get asked. I’ve always said the fans are the most important people at this club and I think it’s time to tell them what’s going on and obviously this year is going to be my last.”

“But I think it’s better for me to go out because I can focus completely on the team from now until the end of the season. I think it’s important to do that and I’ve always done that.”

“But it will be near the end when it’s time to say an emotional farewell and tell the fans and everyone associated with this club what it means to me. I don’t think I’m ready for that yet. I’m just trying to get it out there so I can be open and honest with everyone.”

Robertson is the second high-profile Liverpool player to announce his departure from the club in recent weeks, after Mohamed Salah first announced last month.

The Egyptian international has revealed his intention to move on despite having one year left on his contract with the Reds in April last year.
