Manchester United are on track to qualify for the Champions League after England secured fifth place with Arsenal’s win over Sporting

Manchester United got a timely boost to their hopes of achieving their only remaining goal of the season courtesy of Premier League rivals Arsenal on Tuesday night. Kai Havertz’s late winner against Sporting in the Champions League quarter-final first leg ensured that five clubs will once again qualify automatically for the top flight in English football.

England currently hold a firm lead in the UEFA coefficient rankings, which automatically secures them an additional spot in the Champions League. Italy and Spain are currently competing for the remaining additional spots. For United, this means Michael Carrick’s job has become considerably easier, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The former midfielder was brought in to lead United back into the Champions League and the Red Devils are on the verge of achieving just that, having picked up 23 of a possible 30 points from his first 10 games in charge.

United currently sit in third place with 55 points after 31 games, seven points behind sixth-placed Chelsea. United will still want to finish as high as possible, but third place is a realistic ambition and 70 points would ensure a top-five finish.

Chelsea, currently in sixth place, can only reach the maximum of 69 points if they win all of their remaining games. Realistically, given the current form of Liam Rosenior’s side, the Red Devils may fall short of that goal, but 70 points is United’s magic number to mathematically secure their place.

United have won seven of their 10 Premier League games under Carrick and have seven games remaining. Five wins in the remaining games would be enough to secure a return to the Champions League. Liverpool, currently in fifth place, could also reach up to 70 points, with five wins likely enough for the top four.

United travel to Chelsea on Saturday 18th April, before hosting fellow Champions League hopefuls Liverpool on Sunday 3rd May. Here’s what the Reds’ Premier League preparations look like against the rest of Chelsea’s schedule.
