Harry Maguire has signed a new contract with Manchester United and is already looking ahead to the summer transfer window, when the club will be tasked with strengthening their squad.

Harry Maguire believes Manchester United can compete for the Premier League title next season if they do well in the summer transfer window. Maguire has signed a new one-year deal with United and is feeling positive ahead of a “really, really big” summer for the club.

The 33-year-old defender has enjoyed a resurgence since Michael Carrick took over as interim manager in January. Under Carrick, United have picked up 23 points from a potential 30, moving them into third place in the Premier League.

They are on track to qualify for next season’s Champions League, but Maguire believes there is still a lot of work to do. United spent £225m last summer signing Senne Lamence, Brian Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesco, but the veteran centre-back has called on club leaders to invest again in the off-season.

The Manchester Evening News reported that Maguire said: “It’s been a fantastic few months under our manager’s care.” “I feel like the team is starting to look like a strong team, but this summer is going to be big, really, really big. We need more players, we need better quality, we need players to be in the starting eleven.”

“If you look at the Premier League at the moment, obviously in the last few years it’s been Manchester City and it’s been really tough to catch them and we knew before the season started that we had to build up points so that some guy could catch them.

“Looking at next season, I think if we have the right people and everything goes positive from now until the end of the season and we continue to move on a curve where there are no limits to what we can reach, we have to be in that slot. We have to be in the conversation to win big trophies.”

United have not won the Premier League since 2013 and have been unable to replicate that success, with Manchester City leading the table. But Maguire is on the upswing after winning seven games in 10 games under Carrick, ahead of Aston Villa, Liverpool and Chelsea.

“I want to win big trophies. I think that’s part of playing for this club,” he said. “I always say that in football there are memories. You can make memories by playing iconic matches and scoring goals, but the bottom line is that you get memories by winning big trophies. I want to be a part of that too. It’s everyone’s dream.”

A return to the Champions League will help United’s director of football Jason Wilcox sign top players in the summer. Mr. Wilcox and Chief Executive Officer Omar Berrada will also be the ones deciding whether to hand over full-time management duties to Mr. Carrick.

United will have 24 days off from their 2-2 draw with Bournemouth until Monday’s game against Leeds. They were taken to a four-day training camp in Dublin in preparation for the match at Old Trafford.
