Mohamed Salah was left on the bench as manager Arne Slott brought on five other substitutes during Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain.

Steven Gerrard praised Mohamed Salah’s professionalism after witnessing his actions after Liverpool’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night. The Reds lost 2-0 at the Parc des Princes with Salah left on the bench by Arne Slott.

On a night when Liverpool did not have a single shot on target, goals from Désiré Douet and Hviča Kvaratschelia gave dominant PSG a deserved victory. Slott changed their usual tactics and solidified their defense with five players, but it was thanks to goalkeeper Giorgi Mamadashvili and the officials that they were able to keep the score in check.

Ibrahima Konate survived two potential penalties, but his tackle from behind was overturned by VAR review and the second one was ruled to have been an insufficient push. It was a disappointing night for Liverpool, who must overturn a two-goal deficit in the second leg at Anfield next week.

And it was especially difficult for Salah, who was left on the bench as the slot changed to five other substitutes. The 33-year-old recently announced his departure at the end of the season, striking out in the slot in December and becoming extremely frustrated with his position on the sideline.

However, after the defeat, he was seen doing running drills on the pitch before coming to greet TNT Sports pundits Gerrard and Steve McManaman, as well as presenter Laura Woods.

Gerrard was then asked to put himself in Salah’s shoes. “It’s frustrating because I think he’s sitting there thinking, ‘I’m going to do my part to influence this game and improve the way it goes,’ certainly from a future perspective,” said the Liverpool legend.

“So he’s going to be a bit sad and frustrated, but he deserves credit for what he’s done. He’s stayed out there and done the extra running, because if we didn’t have the midweek game Wednesday would probably be a big session, so in his mind he’s already thinking of Fulham and doing the extra work. It shows the professionalism and the mentality you’re dealing with.”

Asked whether Salah should start in the second leg against PSG, McManaman replied: “Would I start him? Personally, I would. I don’t know about[Alexander]Isak’s fitness, but he played 20 minutes tonight. I think he will play against Fulham and depending on how that result goes, I would definitely play him.”

Liverpool will turn their attention to the Premier League this weekend, with Slott’s side taking on Fulham at Anfield on Saturday night. The Reds are without a win in their last three league games and are in fifth place, five points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Slott gave a pessimistic assessment of the team’s performance against PSG. “Looking back at the whole game, I think we were lucky to only lose 2-0,” he told TNT Sports.

“The first goal felt difficult. I think it was very good because we were still level. We can take us to Anfield and we know how great Anfield is for us.”
